With the current recession and seemingly endless news pertaining to manmade climate change, alternative energy proposals have been getting a fair amount of press. By a long shot, the greatest amount of discussion has been going to solar power. Many home-owners have been opting for do it yourself solar power to provide their houses with electricity. But why should you decide to power your home with solar energy?

There are two very good reasons to use solar energy to power your home. Though both reasons are equally valid, certain people will feel more of a pull to one or the other dependent on their personal core beliefs. In any case, by supporting 1, you are helping the other, so you can feel happy about your choice regardless of you made it.

One reason to switch to a DIY solar system for your residence is to save on your electrical bill. It is without question that if you supplement or completely replace your current electrical system with a solar energy system, your monthly bills will be reduced. Most energy providers calculate their billing on your pull from the system. If most, or all of your electricity is being consumed from solar energy, it only makes sense that you will pull less from your provider, and be billed less as a result.

The other reason to change to solar power is to have a positive effect on the planet. Most electrical providers are far from environmentally conscious, and their current techniques are not sustainable. If mankind keeps having a similar impact on the planet that we are currently having, we will not survive as a species long enough to worry about doing a bit of extra work to swap over from electric to solar energy. We need to switch to a sustainable model while we still have the opportunity.
