What is Pocket Bike Racing?

Pocket bike racing, also called Mini GP racing, is racing using miniature versions of full size motorcycles, called pocket bikes. This type of racing usually occurs on tracks designed for karts. It is extremely popular in Europe and Japan, and is gaining in popularity all over the world, especially in the United States.

In general a pocket bike is about a quarter a regular motorbikes size, and has an internal combustion engine of about 45cc producing form 3 to 15hp, which varies with the exact model. There is no suspension on a pocket bike but they rely instead on bumps being absorbed by the tires. Most models weigh approximately 35 pounds. Models for newcomers will generally produce about three to four horsepower, but the more expensive racing models produce more power. The best pocket bikes for racing have a very favorable power-to-weight ratio. Performance enhancements are sometimes added to increase speed and acceleration. In spite of their small size, both adults and children can reach speeds of at least sixty miles per hour under good conditions.

Pocket bikes are small and easy to transport, and they are low cost which adds to their attractiveness for both adults and children. The cheapest pocket bikes imported from China are approximately $200 for a no frills model, although you could pay as much as as $4000 for a top of the line Italian bike. Children from around six or seven can be taught the motorcycle racing while adults are able to feel the thrill of motorbike racing but not the risks involved in the usual full size motorcycle racing.
